First of all thanks to Shuhei for sharing this very interesting interview.

After thinking about the last months happenings and realizing more and more what we human

beings will face in the future and will need to dramatically change in our comfortable money

driven capitalistic world, I bumped into below interview which shows me that leaders in

the fashion world deeply think of what and how to change their business in order to survive in

a sustainable way.

Japanese consumption has been one of the front tier over the last decades when it comes to

service, merchandising, production, product selection and quality.

Everyone who has been in Japan can clearly confirm that esp. cities like Tokyo and Osaka

are unique islands of "well developed consume behaviors", experienced, resistant and

consciously manipulated....

But facing current world wide financial and natural disasters, issues to provide education,

health insurance and food to a larger group of people,

hopefully might change the way of how people think about

Fashion and other consumer goods which simply help expressing your individuality, style &

personality in a superficial and shallow way.

Part 1 :Factors in Fashion 　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　

This time, we called on Hirofumi Kurino, founding member of United Arrows and authority on the business of fashion, at his home.

Approaching the single family home in Setagaya-ku Tokyo, we were thinking ‘if you are gonna have someone tell you about clothes, there is only one man to speak to!’. There, three generations of the Kurino clan cohabitate; Kurino’s commitment to family is as deep as his history in fashion is long.

On Working in the Fashion World

Fashion is something that is can be understood on many levels, though “change” has always been of fundamental importance. But change, does not in and of itself, give something value.

Since the sub-prime loan collapse, many areas of society have had to change dramatically. Until now, we have both produced and consumed a great deal. Now that that system has broken down, we are not likely to continue being a society based on making newer and newer things and disposing of them only to make newer and newer things. People all over the world rotate on different axes, but basically we are all moving toward the idea that we are needlessly consuming.

So while it may seem that the “fast fashion” mindset has taken over our habits of consumption, I really don’t think that it can ever become a truly deciding factor. I mean, from now on, the way we buy will go in a different direction. An example is what you are doing now, Mr. Toyama, with PTB. Giving more meaning to what and how we consume.

That is not to say we haven’t given meaning to the way we buy, but in the past we didn’t put much serious thought into it. People just needed some sort of justification for what they bought.

In the 80s, the justification was that we wanted to appear successful. In the 90s, the justification was to be “on trend”. The first 10 years of the 21st century have been a transition period in which those two excuses were all mixed up and used together.

From now on, people will look at a purchase from the standpoint of either, does this have meaning? Or, does this have value? I think consumers here in Japan will become that way within the next five years.

Are people becoming more individually conscientious?

Yes, people are really considering whether items have a specifimeaning for them. At PTB, you sell every item with a story, right? Every item, therefore is sold as a set with the experiences of the previous owner. In that way, a baton is passed between the meaning the item held for the first owner and the meaning it can share with the second, or how the second owner interprets the item’s meaning for his/her own use. It’s not about buying is what is en vogue, not buying what is famous, but buying what is meaningful to you on a personal level. I think that is only going to become more and more of a widespread phenomenon. For fashion, that means we will see more avant-garde, more conceptual fashion. When the economy is good, conservative items sell well. When the economy goes bad, more creative goods start to sell well. That paradigm is something we have been taught for long years, and in fact is true just now. What sells now are things that really strike you, or otherwise make your lifestyle more fun, give some kind of theme to your life—that’s why temporary items becoming unsellable is a good thing, because we are really coming face to face with our goods. This, to me, this can be an effect of a bad economy, and a really important point in the change in the concept of value since 2008. I think that if we are forced to rethink fashion, which once was about people and their relationship to clothing in general, as now being about people and their relationship to particular articles of clothing.

On the future of Japan and Fashion

I have been in apparel for 33 years, and I think that what Japan can do as an advanced consumer nation is provide a new model to show the world. Probably, Tokyo is already number one in terms of fashion, culture, service and business methods……. If that is true, I think it is natural that we should come to export this culture as well. If Japan begins to transmit culture to the world, then that would be a role Japan should fulfill. That is the role of being an developed consumer nation, and that is what we should do. Just as I happen to think that individually, I guess it was fortunate that United Arrows was founded on the common principle of “meaningful retail” 20 years ago. There is no discrepancy between what I believe as a person and our beliefs as a company. “Make your real style” is UA’s company policy, so let us make items that are real for you and from them we make our own real style, Let us help you with your shopping, Let us help you make your life more enjoyable is really our company policy. We collaborated with italian sneaker retailer ILT based in Rome.

It's been a great pleasure to have Fabrizio and his team being a part of our Family & Friends initiative.

He picked the legendary Ultimate 81 and colored it in an entire black upper with red pops on the lining, the outsole and the heel logo.
The materials have been carefuly picked to nowadays needs using a full reflective Tiger striping and mix of cordura and leather pannels.

All in all a very nice and well balanced silhouette revealing many hidden details.

Redefining the standard of expectation and elegance, French car manufacturer Peugeot releases their latest Hx1 prospective concept vehicle. Illustrating their ability to craft fresh ideas and reinvent themselves, the HX1 is designed to help envision the future of car architecture, aerodynamics, and the environment.

Exterior

Created with a drag coefficient of only 0.28, designers crafted the HX1′s exterior with a formidable aerodynamic value that achieves an extremely fluid and elegant styling aesthetic. Other notable conceptualizations to the exterior include four reverse-opening “half-scissor” doors that create an ease of access to the interior passenger compartment. Enhancing the anterior of the car, a “floating” front grille gives the illusion that it is completely detached from the bodywork of the vehicle.

Interior

The interior cabin houses mostly brushed metal and digital components. A recurring theme in the evolution of the auto industry, the HX1 makes use of driver adaptation technologies to memorize and situate itself to each individual driver. Rear leather seats recline amidst a centre console that houses a minibar and coffee machine. Completing a modern appeal, the interior is adorned with white Carrare marble, folded and stitched leather as well as natural wood inlays.

Environment

Integrating HYbrid4 technology, Peugeot crafted the HX1 to power its front wheels with a hybrid diesel engine while an electric motor powers the rear wheels. Priority was given to positioning the HX1 as an environmental leader in the years to come. I apologize for the long abstinence but took a few days off and spent a beautiful time in croatia. It was my fifth time at the dalmatian coast and a few pics will follow soon.

Very interesting idea, simplifying the construction of a running shoe and following the "green zeitgeist" BUT

The locality of Stadtilm in Thüringen gets its name from the River Ilm that flows through it. This is where Paul Hoffmann founded his shoe factory in 1898. Paul Hoffmann & Co. began focusing on sports shoes in the 1930s, at the same time deciding to change its rather unwieldy name and looking to the river for inspiration:

ilmia survived the Second World War, as well as the ensuing American and Russian occupations. As an official people-owned enterprise, ilmia made cleated footwear for East Germany’s football teams.

In 1998, though, one hundred years after its founding and nine years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the shoe manufacturer on the River Ilm decided to call it a day.

ilmia’s rebirth began, of all things, with a left shoe.

Berlin-based designer Helge Hansen found it in a local flea market in 2003 and snapped it up.
Orphaned shoes or gloves are a familiar sight all around.

They capture the imagination – how did that single item get there? – but rarely are they picked up and taken home.

Designers see it differently: the chances of coming across a sports shoe you really like bearing a brand name you’ve never heard of are rare.
Hansen went in for some detective work and brought his wife, into the venture.

They discovered that ilmia had closed down in 1998 and set about tracking down more of the company's relics. Their seeds of interest began to germinate:
could new life be breathed into the former East German brand by cross-fertilizing artisanal manufacture with contemporary design?
The couple presented two limited-edition ilmia sports shoes at the 2004 DMY International Design Festival in Berlin – these bore a contemporary look but remained faithful to the original. Fashioned in Germany from full-grain leather, all 250 shoes were soon sold.

However, one all-seeing, all-powerful sports shoe multinational had different ideas. It alleged similarity between its logo and that of ilmia and applied to the courts for an injunction.

ilmia’s renaissance appeared to be over before it had even properly begun. The Berliners were close to giving up their project.

The second comeback in 2005 took the form of a limited run of shoes bearing a clean-lined, refined look and without the previous motifs on the sides.

But the famous brand’s action for injunction against the new ilmia designers had sapped their energy and passion. The relaunch appeared doomed.
Yet ilmia was destined to live another day…

That same year, 2004, Swiss industrial designer Christian Gafner discovered the limited-edition ilmia shoes on the Internet. It was love at first sight. Contact with the project’s Berlin initiators was quickly established and the whole story surrounding the sports shoe multinational and its injunction came out. Gafner’s practised eye immediately spotted the shoes’ potential. Unpacking the pair he had ordered over the Internet, he breathed in a set of familiar scents: the hint of adhesive and the fragrance of leather that took him back to his childhood and the hours spent in his grandfather’s shoemaking workshop.

2006 found Christian Gafner working for Porsche Design, designing wristwatches for the prestigious brand. Deciding to take on the challenge of ilmia, he paid several visits to Berlin and spent the following two years preparing for the brand’s definitive relaunch. As a result, the shoes continue to be handcrafted in Weissenfels (Saxony-Anhalt, Germany). Through skilful application of the rules of shoemaking, every upper is hand fashioned from high-grade full-grain leather and fitted with an outsole.

The design reinforces the brand’s authenticity, steering clear of short-term fashion trends. ilmia has no graphical logo as such, preferring instead to embroider its distinctive logotype on the outer flank of the left shoe in acknowledgment of the orphaned left shoe found in the Berlin flea market – the event that triggered the brand’s rebirth.

Freedom from Pain - People & Power - Al Jazeera English

For much of the Western world, physical pain ends with a simple pill. Yet more than half the world's countries have little to no access to morphine, the gold standard for treating medical pain.

Freedom from Pain shines a light on this under-reported story. "For a victim of police torture, they will usually sign a confession and the torture stops," says Diederik Lohman of Human Rights Watch in the film. "For someone who has cancer pain, that torturous experience continues for weeks, and sometimes months on end."

Unlike so many global health problems, pain treatment is not about money or a lack of drugs, since morphine costs pennies per dose and is easily made. The treatment of pain is complicated by many factors, including drug laws, bureaucratic rigidity and commercial disincentives.

In India, the first stop in the film and the world's largest grower of medicinal poppy for developed countries, there are severe restrictions to the use of morphine domestically. In 27 out of 28 states in India, narcotics laws are so strict that doctors fear prescribing it, and patients literally scream for relief. Drug companies have little incentive to manufacture morphine for the domestic market because of reporting requirements and small profit margins.

In the Ukraine, the film reveals that access to pain medication is halted by outdated, Soviet-style bureaucracy, arbitrary limits on doses, and a lack of oral morphine. As a result, many patients experience prolonged bouts of untreated pain, particularly in rural areas. In the Ukraine, we learn that Artur, a former decorated KGB colonel suffering from prostate cancer, sleeps with a gun under his pillow - his only way out, should he decide his pain is too great.

Nadia, a single mother living in Kiev, tells of the anguish of living with a son in constant pain. Vlad, her son, was diagnosed with terminal cancer and sent home from the hospital with nothing but the meagre government dose of pain killers. Nadia recounts how his agony grew to the point where he once attempted suicide, nearly throwing himself from a four story window. It would be another three long years of mother and son battling with severe pain until Vlad died.

Until the Ukrainian leadership acts to remove the barriers to palliative care, it falls to defiant individuals like Sergey Psiurnyk, a modern-day Robin Hood, to ensure that suffering people get the morphine they need.

Riding with Psiurnyk as he makes his rounds, he says he risks years in jail to collect morphine from sick people who do not need it and deliver it to people who do.

Overall, Freedom from Pain reveals that bureaucratic hurdles, and the chilling effect of the global war on drugs, are the main impediments to a pain free world. Patients will continue to suffer until global bodies actively work with countries to exclude medical morphine from the war on drugs, and change the blunt drug laws that curtail access to legitimate medical opiates worldwide. Uri Fedotov, the executive director of the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime, admits in the film that the war on drugs is cutting people off from pain medication, but offers little in the way of concrete proposals for changing the status quo.

Lohman points out that inertia may be the greatest obstacle to improving access to morphine, and that pressure brought by doctors and human rights activists is critical to getting pain medication to the people who need it. That is what happened in Uganda, the final stop in the film. Dr Jack Jagwe, who served in that war-torn country's health ministry in the 1990s, worked closely with foreign doctors and the international community to put into writing that every citizen there should have the right to palliative care - a first in Africa.

Uganda also changed its laws to allow nurses in rural areas to prescribe morphine - another first. Today, they visit people in pain and administer liquid morphine without any doctor's involvement. Uganda is seen as a potential model for pain treatment, but most improvements around the world have been small and localised, resulting from the efforts of "enterprising entrepreneurs" like Dr M. R. Rajagopal, a pioneer of palliative care. In India, medical morphine is readily accessible only in the small state of Kerala because of his unceasing efforts.

With the help of his colleagues and the cooperation of the state drug controller, Rajagopal led the push to create a streamlined operating procedure for morphine licensing in Kerala. Now patients in desperate need of pain drugs have access and doctors do not fear strict penalties. Rajagopal, who has helped create a model for the rest of India, says what is desperately needed is "systematic evaluation of the problem ... in the developing world, and an action plan aimed at overcoming it".

Freedom from Pain was shot and produced by a team of students and teachers from the University of British Columbia's Graduate School of Journalism International Reporting Program (IRP). Peter W. Klein, an award-winning producer who is the director of the UBC School of Journalism and the IRP, led the project.

After checking the web I bumped into the 2009 300 SL Panamericana, the model is based on a reproduction made by Gullwing AG - who produces the closest model you can get to the real 300 SL.

Power comes from a 5.5L V8 M-133-55 engine that is used on the SLR and other AMG models. The engine will be mated to a speedtronic transmission and has been retuned to produce 370-hp with a maximum torque of 391 lb-ft.
